Safety valves are designed to be installed in commercial or industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems, on elements like: evaporators, condensers, volumetric compressors, liquid receiver tanks, liquid accumulator tanks, heat exchangers, oil separators, and pipelines. The main function of a safety valve is to protect the above listed equipment from any overpressure, above the operating conditions for which they have been designed, in respect of the standard EN 378-2:2016 and Directive 209/105/EC.

Unbalanced conventional direct load safety valves open when the thrust on the plunger exerted by the fluid under pressure, under calibrated conditions, overcomes the opposing force of the spring acting on the plunger. Each safety valve is identified with an alphanumerical serial number and a model number consisting of an alphanumerical code that indicates the family of the valve, the connection type, and the calibration pressure in bar.

Safety valves are always accompanied by a declaration of conformity to the reference directive, which explicitly indicates the emission data, and the calibration certificate.

Bursting discs are safety devices designed to be installed in civil and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems. They act to protect equipment from any overpressure, with respect to the operating conditions for which they have been designed.

Bursting discs are manufactured from a calibrated gauge of nickel sheet, contained by a copper ring case. These discs are designed to burst at a predetermined pressure called the specified burst pressure, related to an associated temperature and a burst tolerance.

Safety device accessories are complementary support components that allow the installation of the safety devices on a line / equipment to be protected from overpressure. Among these are standard fittings, shut-off valves, and switching valves.

Standard fittings allow assembly of some of the safety valves, the bursting discs, the shut-off valves and the switching valves near the equipment under pressure in the system. Standard fittings can be assembled with two methods: creating of a copper branch tube that connects the pressurized equipment to the fitting or making a hole in the inlet/outlet piping near the pressurized equipment.

Shut-off valves are supplied with the ball in the open position and the protective cap-nut on the handle has a lead seal to the body. Any action to close the valve, which requires tampering with the seal, must only be performed by personnel authorized to work on the system, by a state inspector responsible for reopening the valve and applying a new personal lead seal.

The switching valves act as a service tap for a pair of safety valves, guaranteeing the use of one and the isolation of the other. In this manner, the user can work on the isolated valve to perform periodic inspection or replacement, while the line is fully operative and the safety system is integral.

Fusible plugs are safety devices that contain a material that melts at a specific temperature, venting the pressure. Castel has decided to classify these devices, according to Directive 2014/68 EU, as safety devices on specific pressure equipment belonging to Risk Category I. Therefore they cannot be installed, as
the sole safety devices, on pressure equipment in Risk Categories greater than I.
Fusible plugs are basically used to protect the components in a refrigerating system or heat pump against possible overpressure, with regard to the operating conditions for which they have been designed, caused by an external heat source with excessive heat, such as fire.
